Prolonged Bottle Feeding Linked to Childhood Obesity (May 5, 2011)
Abstract:
"There is agreement among experts in pediatrics, nutrition, and public health that childhood obesity prevention should begin before children enter school, but evidence is lacking about which interventions are effective," write Rachel A. Gooze, MPH, from the Center for Obesity Research and Education at Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and colleagues. "Drinking from a bottle beyond infancy is a behavior that could contribute to obesity by encouraging the child to consume excess calories. Prolonged bottle use is defined as using a bottle later than 12 to 14 months of age and can include using a bottle to feed the child liquids during meals and snacks, putting a child to bed with a bottle, or both."
