Mental Health First Aid Training for Healthcare Professionals and Students - I - 2026

Who should attend?

Medical Students, PMSA-Palestine members.

Aims and Objectives:

Mental Health (Psychiatric) First Aid is a practical, capacity-building training developed in partnership between the Continuous Medical Education Department at IMET2000 and Hakini. Delivered through interactive, hands-on training, this program equips Palestinian healthcare professionals with the essential skills required to recognise, manage, and sensitively respond to emotional distress and mental health emergencies in high-pressure clinical settings. The workshop aims to enhance psychological preparedness, foster safer care environments, and strengthen the overall quality of patient care.

This training specifically aims to:

Support learners to develop and display an acceptable level of the following:

  1. Understand the core foundations and limits of Psychiatric First Aid without attempting diagnosis or formal therapy.
  2. Master early recognition of mental health challenges and acute emotional distress using structured frameworks.
  3. Recognise the level of interventions that can be provided to patients and colleagues with emotional distress.
  4. Apply practical stabilisation, de-escalation, and grounding techniques in real clinical encounters.
  5. Decide when to offer support themselves and when to refer to specialised help.
  6. Communicate and refer cases of mental distress clearly and sensitively with the specialised person/department.
  7. Demonstrate practical decision-making and crisis response through context-specific scenario simulations.
  8. Maintain professional ethics, strict confidentiality, and healthy boundaries while delivering compassionate support.
  9. Integrate personal self-care and stress management strategies to mitigate secondary trauma and burnout.
